I tried dog-as-food my first month in China, as it was part of the festival tradition during that time.<br /><br />I had it in the back of my mind that I would have to try it, or be offered it at some time. I really thought it to be quite like roast beef.<br /><br />Understandably I had seen certain canines in low bamboo cages on their way to market. I recall one time looking into the soulful eyes of one mutt in a cage--it was hard to not pity the dog.<br /><br />Yet I reminded myself I have no problem scarfing down Hindu Indian's sacred animal, the bovine without reservation. And when I was married (a Russian) we bought horse meat salami, also very delicious.<br /><br />The dogs for sale in China as pets were usually in small cages, as were cats and other creatures.
