English speaking clubs in Saigon

I am wondering if more free English speaking clubs would be helpful for students. My experience so far is that even if students pay up to 250.000 VND fee for English speaking clubs, they don't learn a lot. So I think foreigners have to step in and provide it for free. It's actually just an hour a week and both parties can learn from each other. I know that there are already some clubs, for example every Tuesday and Thursday 7pm to 8:15pm at Tomorrow Cafe locating at M1A That Son, Bac Hai area, Dist 10. Can anyone provide me more information?

Hi Thomas,

If they want more English speakers to participate, why have it in D. 10? I mean, do many foreigners live there? Have it in D. 1 or 3... I'd like to join but no way in heck I'm going that far after a tiring day at work.

Take care,
Timen

I highly appreciate your idea, Thomas. I personally used to help in some English clubs and find that this model of English learning really works.

And yes, it should be made free or just small admission fee to help organizers with photocopying or refreshment expenses.

Foreigners will play a vital part in those clubs as Vietnamese people in general have a preferential taste for English-speaking internationals. They would gather round you and suck in every single word let out of your mouth. Yet, it can only work if those foreigners are chatty, understanding, and enthusiastic with topics in discussion.

Another key issue is activities needed. Most of Saigon-based clubs are offering small talks, which are moderated, or sometimes over-moderated by a helper, and then a long presentation delivered by a speaker, then discussions. More activities should be in place to make timid speaker tick!

English is a craze in Vietnam, yet it will take a long way for a majority of the Vietnamese to use the language correctly and fluently. So many issues in the local ESL teaching and learning practices nowadays.

So are you now having the club established somewhere in Sai Gon? Because, gosh, if you are, I'd like to join. I won't be getting all over you "foreigners" coz all I want is moments that i can fully use English. I've been to many countries in the world, seeing foreigners is not a big surprise to me like a baby seeing a cat for the first time. Anyways, inform me about the place so I can come to help out stuff.
