In Ho Chi Minh City on Le Hong Phong Street in District 5, between Hung Vuong and Tran Phu, and on the corner of Nam Ky Khoi Nghia and Nguyen Thi Minh Khai are the two main locations that display dogs for sale.
Along the stretch of Le Hong Phong are shops crammed with cages displaying various dogs and cats. The animals, for the most part look healthy, but living conditions are grim, with several living in one cage.

Living in China for five years, I saw much of the same. I tried dog-as-food my first month in China, as it was part of the festival tradition during that time.
I had it in the back of my mind that I would have to try it, or be offered it at some time. I really thought it to be quite like roast beef.
Understandably I had seen certain canines in low bamboo cages on their way to market. I recall one time looking into the soulful eyes of one mutt in a cage--it was hard to not pity the dog.
Yet I reminded myself I have no problem scarfing down Hindu Indian's sacred animal, the bovine without reservation. And when I was married (a Russian) we bought horse meat salami, also very delicious.
The dogs for sale in China as pets were usually in small cages, as were cats and other creatures. I suppose we should view it as fortunate they are even BOTHERING to sell certain animals as pets rather than food stuff, yes?
